Experiments

Visual systems we build to find out how they work — generative instruments, interface studies, and recoveries of older computer art. Everything here runs as plain HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with no build step. Take what is useful.

Bubble WriterOpen generated bubble letteringType a phrase and it is written into the frame a letter at a time — ink dots gather, the letter inflates around them, then deflates and scatters them again. The letterforms are generated, not a font: a thin skeleton pushed out to a true offset curve, then relaxed under surface tension and internal pressure until the stems bow. Computer Graphics and ArtOpen 1976 · 16 instrumentsSixteen visual systems from one 1976 issue, rebuilt as working instruments. Open a card, change its rules, make a new image from the mechanism. Pixel Garden LabOpen 11 interface studiesA seeded pixel-plant system, then eleven interface studies built on it — heroes, footers, 404s, OG images. TesseraOpen instrumentDrop in a picture and pick a style — it comes back in lines and cubes, the Base image treatment: yellow maze, blue bars, figure, rooster. A WebGL shader after Mouthwash Studio, John Provencher and Karel Martens.
